During
the creation of my magazine, I had planned many idea’s to get an understanding
of specific target audiences towards music types and genres. Being quite
generic, Rock and Pop genres were highly popular in magazines and this created
an easy sense of layout when producing such a magazine. During my Preliminary planning
tasks, I focused on College magazines, to get a better understanding of layout
of what a magazine should look like and how they should appeal to an audience.
These were factors such like, character image of the proposed model, house
style colour and its simplicity to stand out and finally what the coversine’s
feature.
Adapting
this into my future Main research I focused on magazines such as Vibe and Q
magazine. This is because they are highly populated magazines that audiences
and consumers find interesting to the music genres that appeal to the audience.
In my research, I focused on Rock and Pop/Grime music to gain influence on what
my idea would be. My intentions were to go with a Pop magazine, solely for the
purposes of my understanding in the music taste and the wide spread variety
artists I knew that could feature in cover lines. However, I also thought of
genre conventions and battling the generic conventions that magazines follow.
Following
up my previous years of music, I decided my original and final idea would be
Indie Rock. This is due to the heavy influence I was under during the time I
studied at secondary school, but to also mention the models proposing to assist
me using specific props, such as a guitar. With my research, I concluded magazines
that publish fortnightly appeal to consumers due to the time they can allocate
themselves to catch up with the music magazines content. This also was
supported by my research of a questionnaire focusing on my audience asking them
what is their preference on time scheduling a magazine of their interests of
this genre. As the Pop genre dominates the majority of UK and USA markets it’s
clear that the audience wants constant updated feedback on every week, similar
to TV programs such as Top 40 that rundown every week of the best music.
By
publishing an Indie Rock magazine as my potential idea, proposed to me that
more research on specific bands, I felt were the best or classics would feature
into the magazine. This was so my understanding in this genre would help me
create a professional looking magazine. Extensive research led me to conclude
that not only should I focus on specific characters and models, which were
upcoming teenagers but also the sense of style and colour I should use in the
magazine. For this I took inspiration from Q and Vibes house style. Both
magazine producers used 3 predominate colours throughout supported by my
questionnaire survey. White, Black and Red were the three colours chosen to be
an optimal stand out. Embedding these colours into my magazine would feature
for the audiences and consumer’s attention for fine detail when looking out for
a magazine.
Latter
the consumers & audiences are focused around high school and college
students who are interested in the Indie Rock music genre, this is because when
producing a magazine, I can focus on what a typical teenager wants from a
magazine and how someone of my age will find a diverse magazine appealing to
them. This then adds onto the weight of my magazines attraction, due to the
main research I have conducted major industries to introduce potential
marketing in jobs or for their higher company advertisements into my magazine.
Overall
the magazine will be an Indie Rock magazine featuring cover lines of classic
and upcoming potential bands and artists in the genre, whilst consistently
conforming my house style colour sense of white, black and red to conform a
dynamic magazine that will challenge certain magazine conventions making my
magazine an individual stand out.
